Politics of Genocide: Bosna i Hercegovina
From the book "Politics of Genocide" author dr. Edward S. Herman
During the civil wars that accompanied the dismantling of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the United States, Germany, NATO, and the European Union (EU) all sided with the national groups seeking to break away from the unified federal state, and opposed the national group that held out for the longest time to preserve it, the Serbs; this placed the Western bloc solidly behind the Croats and Slovenes, then the Bosnian Muslims, and finally the Kosovo Albanians. The wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1995) and Kosovo (1998-1999) received enormous attention in the United States and in the West generally, helped along by the creation of the ICTY and its determined service on behalf of NATO and its Yugoslavian clients (the Bosnian Muslims, Croatians, and Kosovo Albanians) and in opposition to the demonized Serbs. Because the wars were supported and even carried out by the NATO powers, and there was significant ethnic cleansing and ethnic killings, it goes almost without saying that not only "ethnic cleansing" but also the words "massacre" and "genocide" were quickly applied to Serb operations. The remarkable inflation of claims of Serb evil and violence (and playing down of NATO clients' violence), with fabricated "concentration camps, " "rape camps," and similar Nazi- and Auschwitz-like analogies, caused the onetime head of the U. S. intelligence section in Sarajevo, Lieutenant Colonel John Sray, to go public even before the end of the wars in Bosnia with his claim that "America has not been so pathetically deceived since Robert McNamara helped to micromanage and escalate the Vietnam War. Popular perceptions pertaining to the Bosnian Muslim government have been forged by a prolific propaganda machine. A strange combination of three major spin doctors, including public relations (PR) firms in the employ of the Bosniacs, media pundits, and sympathetic elements of the US State Department, have managed to manipulate illusions to further Muslim goals."
The Bosnian government started claims of 200,000 deaths by early 1993, only some nine months after the start of these civil wars, and figures such as this and 250,000 (and sometimes higher) quickly became institutionalized in the establishment media, helping to push the "genocide" claim and to justify calls for foreign intervention to protect the Bosnian Muslims. But this claim came to grief in 2005-2007, when two different studies, the first sponsored by the ICTY itself and the other by the Norwegian government, concluded that the Bosnian conflicts had resulted in combined deaths on the order of one hundred thousand for all sides, including both civilians and military victims. Given their sources, these findings could not easily be ridiculed as "holocaust denial" or "revisionism, " but they were treated in very low-key in the Western media, only slowly displacing the much higher 200,000- 250,000 figures and with no analyses and explanations of the earlier gullible acceptance of the implausible and unverified Bosnian Muslim propaganda claims.
Of course, the "Srebrenica massacre" of July 1995 has been cited heavily and repeated endlessly, and with the greatest indignation, to demonstrate that "genocide" actually had taken place in Bosnia. This was helped along by the fact that both the ICTY Trial Judgment and decision on Appeal in the case of the Bosnian Serb General Radislav Krstic argued that genocide could occur in one "small geographical area" (the town of Srebrenica), even one where the villainous party had taken the trouble to bus all the women, children, and the elderly men to safety - that is, incontestably had not killed any but "Bosnian Muslim men of military age. "90 As Michael Mandel observes, "Genocide was transformed in this judgment, not into mere ethnic cleansing but into the killing of potential fighters during a war for military advantage. In the Krstic case, the concept of genocide, except as pure propaganda, lost all contact with the Holocaust- a program for the extermination of a whole people." The case for eight thousand "men and boys" being executed at Srebrenica is extremely thin, resting in good part on the difficulty in separating executions from battle killings (of which there were many in the July 1995 Srebrenica actions), partly on highly contestable witness evidence (much under coercive plea bargaining), and an interest and passionate will-to-believe the worst of the thoroughly demonized Serbs. A videotape of Bosnian Serbs killing six Bosnian Muslim men, far from Srebrenica and of dubious provenance, was read even by respectable Western analysts as serious evidence that eight thousand had been executed at Srebrenica.
But even if an event such as the Srebrenica massacre occurred exactly as accepted by the Western establishment, we are still faced with the anomaly that the total number of deaths in Bosnia (one hundred thousand on all sides), and even more so the number of Bosnian Muslim civilian deaths during the four years of "genocide" (some thirty-three thousand in all), pales into relative insignificance when compared to the deaths suffered by Iraqi civilians during the thirteen-year-long "sanctions of mass destruction" and the now seven-year-long U. S. invasion and occupation. Given the 800, 000 and one million death estimates for the two Iraqi cases, deaths there exceeded the Bosnian Muslim civilian death toll by 24-to-1 and 30-to-1, respectively. However, as Table 1 shows, the use of the word "genocide" was greater for Bosnia by six times for the sanction-deaths and thirty-seven times for deaths during the invasion-occupation. The anomaly of disparate word usage (and differential attention and indignation) can only be explained by the adaptation of the media and intellectuals to the propaganda and public relations needs of the Western political establishment. They are very attentive to and passionate about Nefarious, hence "genocidal, " bloodbaths; but they are exceedingly quiet over those that are Constructive and display "complexities."

The Srebrenica Massacre was a Gigantic Political Fraud
Renowned author Dr. Edward Herman spoke with John Robles of the Voice of Russia regarding the facts surrounding the Srebrenica Massacre, the pretext for the "humanitarian" invasion of the former Yugoslavia, and takes apart the "official" ; version that has always been promoted by the West.
Dr. Herman reveals that there were in fact multiple massacres at Srebrenica, and that the killing of Bosnian-Muslim soldiers at Srebrenica (the West's pretext) was in response to the killing of over 2, 000 Serb civilians, mostly women and children, at the location.
Robles: My first question is about "The Srebrenica massacre" and the way that the establishment manipulated the media. Can you tell us, or give us some insights, on that?
Herman: The Srebrenica massacre, actually I always put it in quote marks, because actually there were lots of massacres in the Srebrenica area, the one before July 1995 there were vast numbers of Serbs killed by Muslim, Bosnian Muslim, forces who went out of Srebrenica.
One estimate is that there were more than 150 Serbs villages that were totally wiped out and one study gives actually gives the names of 2, 383 Serb civilians who were killed between 1992 and July, 1995. So then we'd call that "the first Srebrenica massacre". Then in July 1995.
Robles: Just to be very clear, these were Serbs, that were being killed.
Herman: Yes! We're talking about 2, 383 Serb civilians killed before July 1995. And the Bosnian Serb Army took over Srebrenica in July, 1995, and there were deaths and executions after that. That's what's called in the West "the Srebrenica massacre", but, in fact, that's really mainly a political construct.
The numbers executed there were probably in the order of between 500 and 1, 000. In other words, less than half of the number of Serbs civilians killed before July, 1995.
And the Western claim is that 8, 000 men and boys were executed in the quote Srebrenica massacre, but notice these were men, always men, all men, they were all soldiers, whereas those 2, 383 civilians killed included very large numbers of women and children.
We're talking about the execution in the second massacre of essentially army people. And of course they had never proved that there were 7, 000 or 8, 000, even men and boys killed. The bodies in the graves added up to something like 2, 500.
A lot of those bodies were combat deaths. One of the beauties of the Western propaganda system is that all the bodies they found after July, 1995, they count as executed, even though we know very well that a large number were killed in combat.
Herman: Also another important fact about the Srebrenica massacre is that all those killings of Serbs took place coming out of an area that was supposed to be a "safe haven". Srebrenica was a safe place, a safe haven. It was supposed to be demilitarized, but it never was.
So the Bosnian Muslim soldiers would come out to Srebrenica and they would kill Serb civilians. This is all completely ignored in the Western media. It's as if the Serbs came in July and started to kill arbitrarily.
In fact, the U. N. military in that area, a French offical name Phillip Morillon, was asked by the Yugoslav tribunal, "Why the Serbs did it?"
He said he's absolutely convinced that they did it because of what the commander of Srebrenica's Bosnian Muslims did to the Serbs before July 1995.
This is the UN Army head, but you won't see that in the Western press!
In other words, the first massacre is what led to the lesser second massacre of namely military aged people.
The whole business of the Srebrenica massacre is a gigantic political fraud. There was a massacre, but it was a responsive vengeance massacre, women and children were not killed.
One of the features of the "quote" Srebrenica massacre, that is the second one, is that 20, 000 Srebrenica women and children were bussed to safety by the Serb army. Women and children were not killed, only military aged people and a very large fraction of those that did die, died in combat.
So my own estimate, as I said, is that maybe there were 500 to 1, 000 executions. Vengeance executions.
Robles: I'm sorry. How many?
Herman: 500 to 1, 000 I would say.
Robles: 500 to 1, 000.
Herman: Yes. So there was a significant massacre, but put it in its context! This was a war, this was an army that had seen their own civilians massacred on a much larger scale. That is completely suppressed in the West, as if the Serbs came in to Srebrenica and started to kill because of a blood lust! It's absolutely a fraud!
So, I regard the Srebrenica massacre as a tremendous propaganda triumph. The West wanted to go after Serbia and they avoided peace. They needed this massacre.
Robles: You said, about 2, 380 civilians, women and children mainly.
Herman: Serbian women and children, yes.
Robles: " were killed initially. This was the Srebrenica"
Herman: The first massacre between 1992 and July 1995. These were Serb civilians. There were also hundreds of Serb military killed in that period, I am just talking about civilians!
Robles: The civilians, right! And then in retaliation approximately 2, 500 Muslim. Bosnian Muslims soldiers were killed.
That's misleading, because the thrust of the 8, 000 claim is that they were executed but those 2000-plus that were killed, a very large fraction were killed in combat.
Robles: In combat. Okay, I see. I see.
Herman: Yes, and the executions were, as I say probably in the order of 500 to 1, 000.
Robles: Okay. So those were Bosnian Muslims who were found to be directly responsible for killing massive numbers of Serbian civilians. Right?
Herman: The Serbs actually had lists of Bosnian Muslim soldiers they wanted to get, but I canft honestly say they were the only ones who were executed. But certainly, a significant number of those executed were on those lists, those vengeance lists.

Srebrenica, nothing but the lies
The following document contains a vital statistics of the Bosnian town of Srebrenica. The information was sent in 1994 by the Muslim mayor to the Muslim institutions in Sarajevo and Tuzla.
The document states that during the Bosnian war in Srebrenica used to live about 37,000 people. The mayor stressed in the letter that this document should not be made available to the international organizations, which had been falsely informed that Srebrenica has up to 45,000 inhabitants.
During the Bosnian war the Muslim government and the Western media claimed that at least 40,000 people lived in Srebrenica.
This document was presented at The Hague Tribunal, during the trial against Radivoje Miletic and it is a legitimate proof that officials in Srebrenica had been invented up to 8,000 residents of the city.

The True Story Behind Srebrenica
by Željko Tomic
the article can be copied with reference to http://www.slavicnet.com/ and the author's name
Srebrenica. A small town in Eastern Bosnia, hardly known even for the local citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina before the Civil war broke in Bosnia during 1992. A few years later, Srebrenica became a "rhetorical device used to arouse emotions and moral outrage" in entire world. According to the media, between 8000 and 10000 individuals (mostly Bosnian men) have vanished for nine days of July 2005.
A small city, which countered 5754 citizens ( 3683 Muslims, 1649 Serbian and 432 others), turned to be the place of a "single largest act of genocide in Europe since the Holocaust? " According to the 1991 census, entire Srebrenica municipality had 37. 211 citizens (27118 Muslim Bosniaks, 9381 Serbian, and 712 others). Since only a half of Muslim Bosniaks were men, according to the media up to 10. 000 men, out of 13. 500 males living in that region, died between July 10 and 15th, 1995. How it was possible?
Soon after the Civil war started in Bosnia, Srebrenica municipality became surrounded by Serbian troops. Since a large territory around Srebrenica had Serbian population as majority, Srebrenica became a small enclave within a new-born Republic of Srpska.
In early 1993 Gen. Morillon entered Srebrenica and told their citizens that they were under protection of UN.
In the years that followed, UN failed to disarm the Muslim soldiers in Srebrenica. On the contrary, the Clinton administration and NATO lifted the arms embargo against Bosnia. The ammunition and firearms were supplied to the protective zone in Srebrenica by the air, but also by Dutch peacekeepers over the Serbian territory.
At the same time, Bosnian president Alija Izetbegovic, was crying for help. He needed to open another frontline against Bosnian Serbs because his army was loosing on most battlefields. His "new" general, former police officer, Naser Oric, raided 56 Serbian villages. He used the safety zone as a protective Haven in order to massacre the Serbian people in surrounding villages. Serbian Army, stretched above the limits, had 3000 soldiers to protect 420 kilometers of frontline around Srebrenica. As a result of that, many Serb villages were burned and destroyed, e. g. Osredak May 1992, Oparke June 01, 1992, Zagora July 05, 1992, Zalezje July 12, 1992 Pajici and Hrahna July 25, 1992, Brezani July 30, 1992, Fakovici October 1992, Kravice January 07, 1993 (Christmas Day for the Orthodox Bosnian Serbs).
As a result of 3, 5 years war against 28th division from Srebrenica, Serbian surrounding population lost about 3600 individuals.
A couple weeks before Srebrenica had fallen under the Serbian control, Bosnian president Alija Izetbegovic requested from Naser Oric and 40 his main commanders to come to Zenica. The official explanation for that there would be some military training for the highest ranked officers. However, it turned out that Srebrenica was a part of a much larger deal with Radovan Karadzic. The Serbs were suppose to surrender Sarajevo suburbs in exchange for Srebrenica. The Muslim population of Srebrenica was thrown in front of the revenge thirsty Serbs.
It will take eight years after the war for The International War Tribunal to indite Muslim General Naser Oric "for the crimes of wanton destruction of cities, towns or villages not justified by military necessity and plunder of property as alleged in this indictment".
I am not here to justify what angry Serbs did when they entered Srebrenica, but I can understand why the local Serbs killed between 700 and 900, mostly Muslim men, in Srebrenica. Some of their relatives were beheaded by the Muslim Bosnian Army, like those three Serbs on the picture.
Yes, I said up to 900 people, but not 10. 000 as the Bosnian government claims.
The Serbian government of Republic of Srpska, one of two entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, formed a team of experts who came up with a list of 7108 «missing» individuals from Srebrenica. However, the list has many problems:
The "Srebrenica massacre" was just another master-piece of the Muslim led government of Alija Izetbegovic. The scenario for the betrayal of Srebrenica was consciously prepared, to blame the Serbian people, who won the war. The Hollywood-like scenario of "Srebrenica massacre" might be a trap for General Ratko Mladic to be indited for war crimes. Alija Izetbegovic didn't care about suffering of his own people, death of destruction. For this Islamic fanatic, the only goal was to create an Islamic Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A recent news report revealed that should it proceed at the current pace, the identification of Srebrenica victims would take 45 more years. In mean time, the entire Serbian population is being blamed (and punished) for thousands of un-existing victims of the "Srebrenica massacre". It has been more than ten years since the Civil war in Bosnia ended. In order to start looking forward into a new future, we need to realize that both, Serbian and Muslim people, were victims of the wrongful nationalist / American politics on Balkans. Some things have to be set right!

The truth of Srbrenica
I have seen some arguments from people, which are muslims and I couldn't believe it at all.
Everybody in the world, who knows a little bit of the history of the Serbs and the history of the Balkan-territory, knows the truth about this war!
It´s unbelievable and impossible that the Serbs had killed so many people. Some people, who are killed in Srebrenica, live today in Germany, Switzerland and so on... For e. g. they are voting in elections in Bosnia!
How does it comes? They aren´t killed!! Nobody is talking about the Serbs who were killed!!!
It´s a shame, because the history repeats!!
For example, nobody cares about the mass-graves in north-east Bosnia, near a town called Derventa, near Croatian border! And why? There are just Serbs in it! For better understanding, the war is 1995 over!
If the bodys would be exhumed one day, the officials will say that this bodies are belonging to Bosnian-muslims or Croats...
Everbody is speaking about the exodus of German people in 1945, but nobody about the exodus of Serbs from Krajina in 1995!!
I´ve seen it!
I´ve seen the truth in Bosnia several times.
Everybody is fighting against Taliban and terrorism, but nobody care about it, that Taliban fighter are living in Bosnia and got Bosnian citizenship...

The real story behind Srebrenica (2)
Then the Security Council changed the wording of the safe-haven resolution from "the UN will defend the safe havens" to "by their presence will the UN deter attacks on the safe havens. " In other words, a tiny, token, lightly armed UN contingent would be placed as sacrificial lambs in Srebrenica to "deter" the Bosnian Serb army.
It didn't take long for the Bosnian Muslims to realize that the UN was in no position to live up to its promise to "protect" Srebrenica. With some help from outsiders, they began to infiltrate thousands of fighters and weapons into the safe haven. As the Bosnian Muslim fighters became better equipped and trained, they started to venture outside Srebrenica, burning Serb villages and killing their occupants before quickly withdrawing to the security provided by the UN's safe haven. These attacks reached a crescendo in 1994 and carried on into early 1995 after the Canadian infantry company that had been there for a year was replaced by a larger Dutch contingent.
The Bosnian Serbs might have had the heaviest weapons, but the Bosnian Muslims matched them in infantry skills that were much in demand in the rugged terrain around Srebrenica. As the snow cleared in the spring of 1995, it became obvious to Nasar Oric, the man who led the Bosnian Muslim fighters, that the Bosnian Serb army was going to attack Srebrenica to stop him from attacking Serb villages. So he and a large number of his fighters slipped out of town. Srebrenica was left undefended with the strategic thought that, if the Serbs attacked an undefended town, surely that would cause NATO and the UN to agree that NATO air strikes against the Serbs were justified. And so the Bosnian Serb army strolled into Srebrenica without opposition.
What happened next is only debatable in scale. The Bosnian Muslim men and older boys were singled out and the elderly, women and children were moved out or pushed in the direction of Tuzla and safety. It's a distasteful point, but it has to be said that, if you're committing genocide, you don't let the women go since they are key to perpetuating the very group you are trying to eliminate. Many of the men and boys were executed and buried in mass graves.
Evidence given at The Hague war crimes tribunal casts serious doubt on the figure of "up to" 8, 000 Bosnian Muslims massacred. That figure includes "up to" 5, 000 who have been classified as missing. More than 2, 000 bodies have been recovered in and around Srebrenica, and they include victims of the three years of intense fighting in the area. The math just doesn't support the scale of 8, 000 killed.
Nasar Oric, the Bosnian Muslim military leader in Srebrenica, is currently on trial in The Hague for war crimes committed during his "defence" of the town. Evidence to date suggests that he was responsible for killing as many Serb civilians outside Srebrenica as the Bosnian Serb army was for massacring Bosnian Muslims inside the town.
Two wrongs never made a right, but those moments in history that shame us all because of our indifference should not be viewed in isolation without the context that created them.

The Serbs Are Victims of Propaganda
The Serbs are not angels, but neither are they devils. They are also the victims of a massive anti-Serbian propaganda campaign.
Starting with the civil wars, Serbs have been blamed for things they never did, while atrocities by Croats and Muslims were ignored. What the Serbs were and are up against are powerful American public relations firms, Western intelligence agencies and biased or incompetent Western reporters.
Maybe you recall a famous picture of an emaciated man standing behind a barbed-wire fence. This was reported as a Muslim being starved in a Serb concentration camp. In fact, the man was a Serb who had been arrested by the Serbs for looting, and he was not emaciated from lack of food but from suffering with advanced tuberculosis.
Yohanan Ramati, director of the Jerusalem Institute for Western Defense, wrote of the campaign against the Serbs: "This organized anti-Serb and pro-Muslim propaganda should cause anyone believing in democracy and free speech serious concern. It recalls Hitler's propaganda against the Allies in World War II. Facts are twisted and, when inconvenient, disregarded. The selectivity in reporting and comment is far too blatant to be accidental. "
Ramati quotes from an interview given on French Two television by James Harff of Finn & Rudder, the public relations firm representing the Muslims. He boasts that the firm's greatest achievement was to get American Jews on the side of Muslims by peddling the concentration camp story published by a New York newspaper. This business of death camps, by the way, was later proven to be a hoax.
But here is a good lesson in how the real world works behind the scenes. Finn & Rudder didn't commit the hoax. It simply took the published story to three major Jewish organizations with a suggestion that they run ads condemning it. The PR guy says that once the Jewish organizations came in on the side of the Muslims, it was easy to equate the Serbs with the Nazis.
Some of the hoaxes perpetrated on Americans include the so-called bread line massacre, the alleged destruction of Dubrovnik, a funeral shown on television of a girl said to be a Muslim victim who was instead a Serb child killed by the Muslims, and, of course, the mass rape hoax, which has cropped up again in Kosovo.
Original allegations in the past of 60, 000 rapes boiled down, after a UN investigation, to 126 alleged victims. Certainly in civil wars women will get rped, but the mass, organized rape story was a pure hoax.
This kind of stuff is still going on because the NATO campaign against Yugoslavia rests on a foundation of lies. I've seen claims by Western journalists that "thousands of refugees have all told the same story. " Use common sense. Do you really think the handful of Western journalists over there have questioned thousands of people? If so, why do they keep using the same video of the same people so often?
And how many of these Western journalists speak Albanian or Serbo-Croatian? My guess is none. That means they have to rely on translators who are probably being furnished by the Kosovo Liberation Army. The refugee can be saying one thing and the translator another, and the reporter will be none the wiser. That happened in Vietnam, where translators sometimes turned out to be Vietcong intelligence agents.
Just remember: NATO is breaking international law, and the United States has no business being involved in the internal affairs of Yugloslavia. One day, we may elect a government that won't lie to us so much.
