The Lion's Gate Bridge

Once upon a time, there was a city which had a bridge with tow lions guarding the south side of the bridge entrance. Since they were stationed in the shadows of the old maple trees, for most kids they seemed to be alive.

There was a small princess living in the city. Her father happened not to be a king, so this is not a fairy tale but a true story.

When the princess was eighteen months old, her father took her over the bridge for the first time. When she noticed the lions, she shouted:

  • "Lions!"

This was a new word in her modest vocabulary, so her father loved her because of that!

At the age of three, they went over the bridge again. This time he made up a story that lions used to roam freely in the park, but he captured them and tied up to the bridge. He did this to protect his baby from naughty lions that had craving to scare small kids.

His daughter listened carefully, but didn't understand a word what he was saying.

Her father loved her because of that!

At the age of five they crossed the bridge again. This time she heard a story how her father killed and stoned the lions which used to live in Stanley Park and prey on little children who were riding bicycles.

She listened carefully with eyes wide open, but said nothing.

Her father loved her because of that!

At the age of seven, while going over the bridge, she listened to the story with disbelief, at the same time wondering if the car doors were locked.

The next day she told him: "Dad, my mother said you were lying to me about the lions!"

Her father loved her because of that!

At the age of nine, she listened her father retelling the same story all over again. This time his voice was more convincing and the story had much more details.

    However, she smiled and said:

"Give me a break, dad! The bridge was named after the two peaks which are called Lion's Mountains. The stone lions are a symbol of the bridge. Don't you think I learn something in the school?"

Her father was so happy she has grown into a smart girl. However, he was sad at the same time. Over all those years he really enjoyed telling the story, but now nobody is willing to listen to him.

This is a true Vancouver story dedicated to my daughter Marija Tomic

    Most zvani 'Lavlja vrata'

I on je volio zbog toga.
